A Final Solution to Lag?
Looks like they may be trying to get rid of us people.
No, not really. The lag they're talking about is the bad kind: the delay experienced when a network packet is sent from one node in a network to another. For many network applications it ain't that big of a deal. But in gaming reducing lag is obviously critical.
In this article over at 2old2play.com they talk about a new gamer-specfic ISP that's looking to reduce lag considerably among the members of their network. The solution? Buy the necessary fiber to reduce the hops between lag. More details:
A company called GameRail is building a dedicated fiber optic network that will piggy back on the Internet and is specifically designed to only carry gaming traffic. How much faster is it? Using a ping command which is a network diagnostic utility, it would take you around 80-100 milliseconds for your ping to travel from the east coast to the west coast and back on today's Internet. Using the dedicated GameRail fiber optic network, pings around 30ms are seen. When you consider light travels 1000 miles every 8-10ms on a fiber optic line, the fastest this could possibly be with no hops is 25ms. So this is a very significant speed increase.
Here's the company's website. They're looking at charging around $15/month for you to piggyback on their service from your existing ISP. If they can really reduce lag down to 30-40ms pings, it really could change online gaming.

That's extra money a month to reduce lag? I don't know about you guys, but I'm a little strapped for cash right now. Adding another monthly expense after killing one (I had to drop WoW :( ) doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I think it's cool that they can reduce lag through this new dedicated ISP, but you'd have to have some serious lag issues to be spending extra monthly money. Or take your gaming experience way too seriously. Sorta like a 16 Halo match, to give both examples.
Personally some of the best gaming experiences have been during lag storms.
"Is that a grenade?" "Looks like a rock..." "Well it's not going off......" "Can you move?" "Nope.. lag" "Hmm... OK, try moving to your left, when the lag wears off we'll see--" BANG.
"Yup, grenade..."

..I think it sounds interesting. I'd possibly be willing to try it out for a month or two, although I'm not sure with the little amount of MP I play if 15 bucks a month is really worth it to me...

But if I decided to join and the person I'm playing against doesn't, how does this help? Will it work with me hosting the game?

Sounds like a good idea in theory. My complaint with the whole idea is what kind of problems arise while connected to people who aren't piggy backing on this service. It seems to me Information goes both ways and I could see this being a problem. But I Am FAR FAR FAR from smart or knowledgeable when it comes to these things so I could be sadly mistaken.
