IMO this article is a long rant from a grandparent who thinks his kids have been encouraged to not parent.
The "article" (must be on the op-ed page) is full of unsubstantiated generalities and unsupported observations. Much of the 'rebelliousness', 'sullenness', 'open hostility' that is being referenced can be attributed to the public's growing tolerance and appreciation for a population that for generations was kept at home and not 'inflicted' on the public at large ie: special needs kids and the hyphenated-challenged. We forget that accepting ALL children as worthy of support and broadening our definition of the mainstream means we are going to see these children in public settings while we watch their parents strive to apply patience and compassion to their unruliness.
School shooters and the chronically violent have always been there - they and their near cousins have quite simply not been so publically appreciated before.
Parents in this day and age are doing an impossible, thankless, underappreciated job in the face of a surrounding population of other parents who can do it better - just like thier parents did.
I, for one, applaud them.
