Just a few questions to you Sony experts. I use Xbox Live to play online games and know what this costs me. Could someone tell me what the cost is to play live games with the Sony Playstation. How does their Live service compare to Xbox Live ?

Sony doesn't have a centralized online network (yet?). Most of the games are free to play, but as a result, they don't offer things like a universal username or friends list.
FFXI w/hard drive, Everquest Online Adventures require a monthly fee associated with MMOs. I've heard rumors that Socom 3 is going to have pay to play content coming soon.
Personally, I found it on par with the Dreamcast's online service.

It's been forever since I played online with the PS2, but it was free. It is nothing like Live. It's clunky and game specific. Still Socom 2 has a very large base of installed players, something like 70,000 unique users per week. That's nothing to sneeze at.

the only game I ever went online with was Twisted Metal Black, reminded me of similiar to PC style games, just go online and either start your own room or jump into someone else's game, more like a direct connect to people to play no centralized thing like Live

Thanks for the answers, It is greatly appreciated. I was thinking of renting a PS2 and SOCOM for a weekend but would not have bought a Live package just for that. Now I know I can go ahead, thanks again.

You may find it difficult to find a rental that includes the modem-NIC. Be sure to check before you rent one.

Thanks Luther, I would have thought that the Network Interface was included. I'll check for that for sure, thanks again.

I just found it awkwardly difficult to find your friends online once you actually logged in.

Thanks Moses, so I see that we are spoiled with Xbox Live (even thought it's not free). I might just rent the PS2 box and Socom and play the SP then. I'm just curious at how that FPS compares to our OG Xbox FPS games and trying it out will surely answer.

fyi SOCOM is 3rd person. It is a an ok game. I personally like SOCOM 3 best of them all. I have played them all. If you are going to rent a PS2 must have rentals are RESIDENT EVIL 4 and God of WAR. Hands down the best games on PS2 right now. Other honorable mentions are the Sly cooper series (platforming), and MGS3 Subsistence. I rented it and LOVE IT. if you like Splinter cell type games this one is awesome. I personally thought a great FPS is Cold Winter. Kinda a James bond like game. pretty fun. and the online is pretty fun as well. Just a few but there are lots of other great games out there. Also Not sure if you have those in quebec or not but Zellers had PS2 slim consoles (network card built in) for like 129.99 or something cheap like that if you think about buying one in the future or something like that.

Thanks for the info Lube, I did see some previews for God of War on TV a few days ago and it does look beautiful. I think I would rent SOCOM 3 then jsut to see how it relates to Call of Duty: the Big Red.

I thought it was out today??
I'm renting it from GameFly and they have it down as 3.16. GameStop has it shipping as today. I don't need it right away as GRAW has me consumed and Oblivion comes out next week. Plus at only $29, I'll just rent and if it's good, I'll keep it for only $20.

sorry for the late reply. Sorry I am not sure how I got it but I did. I found a rental copy at the Gamesrush on Kenaston BLVD. I rented it and played it this morning before work. Not sure maybe they screwed up and put it on the shelves early? I absolutely love it though its camera is dead on. exactly the way it should have been. This is increasingly strange that I am able to rent it when you don't have it yet reese. Canada (especially Winnipeg) is Notoriously behind the time frame for release/street dates. I personally thought that it came out last week and couldn't understand why it was the only rental copy they had and I got it. Mind you its not the collectors edition (much to my chagrin) I am going to try and spend some more time with it tonight and maybe get a multiplayer match in. Perhaps this blockbuster put it on the shelves before they were supposed to? Hmm this is strange but I am not going to call and ask I will just play it as much as I can until I am sick of it and probably bring it back. I mean I have 2 weeks with it and with oblivion next week it probably won't get touched too much. I am glad I got the chance to play it though its infinetely better than the original MGS3. I can't stand the top down anymore

Fantastic, it's nice to see that we finally got something first, lol. Normally by the time we get the games our friends down south are already experts and are just waiting for us to come on line and then they ZAP us good, lol.

That's awesome you got it early Lube, good for you. I can't wait to play this with the new camera. I couldn't hang with the limited top down view anymore and gave up on the last one. Funny, because I said if this had a Splinter Cell camera it would be perfect. Glad to hear it is working well. I am looking forward to playing this very much now. Thanks for the report.

I'll play some more tonight and try and share more... but I have to take my significant other to the mall tonight and I have to go to the tailor and Dry cleaner to pick up my suit and pants. I have a business trip next week so I have to be in top form. But I really hope to pop in that second disc and try the multiplayer. I only got to get to the first bridge in Subsistence this morning so hadn't had much chance trying it. I am hoping we aren't out too late tonight so I can play little more of this tonight. Anyways Got lots of work to do I should stop posting and get my work done so I can get out of here.
