I know..before I even get started with this, I am not trying to start a 360 vs ps3 discussion. I just wanted to share my opinions on this game to those who would even care. Well, as you all know, Im new to the ps3 so I thought that I would go with the game that has gotten the most media IMO Killzone 2.
First off lets talk about the single player:
Now, I havent played the first one, but this seems to be an OK story, dont really know how much I have missed in the overall scheme of things. Its your typical linear shooter where you have checkpoints that you have to reach, badies that you shoot and some tanks that you get to drive (I have only played the first 3 or 4 levels so far). There have been some missions where you fight along a larger group of people, and then there are times that you have to go out wiht one other person to reach the desired checkpoint, things to be demolished, which uses the sixaxis controller to set the charges which is pretty cool IMO. It does focus from time to time on using a lot of cover and leaning out. The action can be pretty crazy from time to time with the sheer amount of people on the screen at once. There are also little intels that you can collect, along with emblems that you destroy to get trophies and others goodies from www.killzone.com (http://www.killzone.com)
Graphics:
On or above par with gears of war IMO. Very beautiful looking game, dark color pallet with lots of greys and blacks. Industrial typesetting, cut scense are beautiful. Guess that helps you see the Helghast's eyes which are orange. Overall, Im really impressed with what I have seen so far.
Controls:
Very different for me with this controller as far as the button setup is. You do have the option of customizing the controls to your liking which I feel all games should really have. The game did seem really "floaty" with the gun control at the start but once you get used to it and change your sensitivity, things get alot better. It has all your typical goodies like being able to carry a pistol and a machine gun or whatever you like. Ammo is plenty and you can also take guns off of dead guys. Grenades are there, but dont seem to do a whole lot of damage as one would think. No squad commands (as far as I have played so far) but if the person that is on the mission with you gets taken out, you can heal him several times over. One mission I had to heal my dude like 5 times and I only have it on normal. lol
Multiplayer:
This is where I think the game really shines. Where to start......hmmmm OK. Lets talk about game modes. One thing that I really found cool about the game is that it takes 6 different games a rolls them all into one. You can set the amount of time for each round. Modes are : body count (deathmatch), search and destroy (you do this for both sides) assasination (where the cpu randomly picks a target on one team to kill, then switch) , control points and retrieve where you find a propaganda speaker and take it to the other teams base. One game I was in was 30 minutes for each game type which allowed alot of Xp experience. Online play has been smooth, never have I got booted off even with a full room of 32 people shooting it out. Kind of like not having a Mic, that way I dont have to hear people so far, but the people have actually been pretty team oriented so far. many are willing to heal you if you are downed. I really like how it is set up for online play.
Leveling up: There are several different levels that you can achieve in the game but making kills, getting objectives, etc. As you progress you get more guns for your solider, more abilities and classes to choose from like medics who can heal downed teammates and engineers to set up turrets. I know that there are more, I just havent gotten that far to unlock them yet. You collect ribbons as you play the game and after you achieve 8 ribbons youu recieve a medal which will give you some sort of perk. Like starting out with more ammo in your gun, more grenades, more xp etc. Ribbons can vary from getting 10 headshots in a round, to healing 10 people, accounting for 10% of othe overall kills, not killing any teammates...so on and so on. You can achieve XP in private games as far as I had heard, but I have yet to play any. You can set up a game for friends against bots, but you will not get anything for it, xp i guess. You also can create an offline match with the bots so you can get used to the maps. I believe that there are 8-12 maps, not quite sure on it. I know that I havent played them all yet.
They have www.killzone.com (http://www.killzone.com) that tracks all your stats just like halo 3 and even has a playback feature where you can watch the match that you played from an overhead view.
Overall: this game has snuck into my top 5 of all time just for the mp IMO. The game would have benfited from a coop mode like resistance 2 has, but what game wouldnt? I give it a solid 9.5
